Excel Downloads

Download Table, Detail Table and Matrix cards as Excel workbooks with real numbers and dates, or attach them to scheduled reports

You can download a Table, Detail Table or Matrix card as an Excel workbook (.xlsx). The workbook holds the same rows, columns, order, labels and totals as the card's CSV, and numbers and dates arrive as real numbers and dates: they sum, sort and filter in Excel without any conversion.

Download a card as Excel

  1. On the card, open Download (from the card's menu or the toolbar's More options).
  2. In the export dialog, choose Excel (.xlsx).
  3. Choose whether to Include column headers.
  4. Click Export.

The dialog decides how the workbook is made, as it does for CSV: a table with up to 10,000 rows downloads right away, and a larger table, up to 1,000,000 rows, exports in full in the background, with every row the server counts. A workbook is never cut off. A Matrix downloads right away when it is small and continues in the background when it is larger. Choose the Matrix layout as you see it, or Flat aggregate table for one row per combination of row and column values.

The dialog shows the export's progress; close it whenever you like and the export continues. A workbook that downloads right away saves on its own. One that runs in the background appears in Activity, behind the bell, ready to download when it finishes. If an export finishes while you're not looking at it, a notice tells you.

What's in the workbook

In the cardIn the workbook
Numbers, currency, percentagesNumber cells with the closest Excel format: decimals, thousands separators, currency symbol and percent. The cell holds the full value, so a compact 1.2M is the number 1,200,000.
Dates and timesDate cells, shown in the dashboard's time zone, as the CSV shows them.
True and falseBoolean cells.
Text, durations, week and quarter labelsText, exactly as the card shows it.
Column headersThe first row, bold and frozen, so it stays in view as you scroll.
TotalsA bold totals row at the bottom, as on the card.
Matrix row labelsRepeated on every row, so you can sort and filter the sheet.
Matrix column headersOne header row per column level, with each value merged across the columns it spans.

Excel shows thousands and decimal separators in your computer's own format. Column widths follow the content.

Scheduled Excel attachments

Table, Detail Table and Matrix cards can be attached to scheduled reports and briefings as Excel, next to PDF and CSV. In the attachment's settings, choose Excel, then:

  • Include headers: whether the first row holds the column names.
  • Use formatted values (Table and Detail Table): on, the workbook uses the card's formats; off, it holds the stored values with Excel's General format.

A Table or Detail Table attachment, in Excel or CSV, holds every row of the card, up to 1,000,000 rows. See Scheduled reports for how large tables are sent.

Workbook size

A worksheet holds up to 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. A card larger than that downloads as CSV instead: the export dialog and the scheduled report both say so, and CSV holds every row.
